Board of Directors Meeting – MINUTES

Thursday, April 1, 2010, 7:00 pm, Willard Brook State Forest Headquarters

 

1.  Attending were Dick Henry, Sue Holzberlein, Eino Kauppi, John D’Angelillo, Emily

     Norton, Tom Nevins, Joellyn Nevins, Jayne Perkins, Ed Torcoletti

2.  Corrections to the minutes - None   

3.  Treasurer’s report – Eino $2,241.62 in check book, 33.00 in checks, 38.31 in cash less

     bill of $128 for T-shirts to be paid.

4.  Membership report – Sussie 60 current; 18 less than 1 year, 45 1-3 years and 18 really

     old.

5.  Publicity

            - spring newsletter – emailed and paper to go out soon, John B has them to give to

              Emily.

6.  Remaining winter programs

            - Sherisa’s hike/snowshoe March 6 – 2 went on hike.

7.  Friends of NRRT

            - Cleanup planning for 4/24 part of Earth Day and Park Serve Day

- Ayer kiosk - at the carpenter’s.

            - Washout north of Sandhill Road - on the list for Engineers to look at this spring.

            - Mural – making progress.

8.  Trails

            - checking flagging on Dead Swamp loop before May 5 – Ed needs this sooner,

              Sussie will do this week.

            - trail maintenance day to be scheduled for the summer.

9.  Fessenden Hill Road gate – in the works.

10. Sy Montgomery program – report – about 50 people came, there was a nice article in

      Townsend Times.

11. T-shirts – are in.

12.  FOWB/Townsend Seniors connection – John D.   Walks were rained out for a 

       couple of weeks, but 8 came on the last walk to Black Rock.  Walks are every

       Tuesday @ 9:30 a.m. weather permitting and last about 1 hour.  They leave from the

       Townsend Senior Center. Emily will add an article about the walks in the summer

       newsletter.

13. Annual meeting plans – June 10 – Tom French speaker

            - location – Voted to  use the Townsend Library Community Room. John D to

              reserve it for us.

            - directors’ nominations – are in the works.

            - invitations to be addressed May 13 at 6:30 pm at Emily’s.  Emily will print the

              invitations, with RSVP to Joellyn

14. Mountain bike trail off Vinton Pond Road; when the weather clears Bruce and Ed to

      look into this.

15. Invasive species committee – Several DCR biologists are willing to help.  First

      Meeting scheduled for Wed 4/21 9:00 am meet at the parking lot in Townsend by the

      common across from Evans store and drive to trailhead for Dead Swamp. 

16. Earth Day – April 24

            - final planning were all set.  Ed gave us some information and handouts on water

              conservation.  Emily, Joellyn and Jayne will handle the table.

 

17. DCR/Forest News  The yurt is in the building process, framing going up.  First

      inspection done.  They may hold a meeting there, it the largest yurt in the state. 

     Willard Brook received approval for guard rails in the parking lot at Damon Pond. 

     New guard rails are being put on the bridge also.  Damon bridge now belongs to MA

     DOT, and they are replacing the railings.  They will honor the historical CCC bridge

     in all their repairs to it.  Sand for Pearl Hill Pond beach area to be done Monday, 4/5. 

     Seasonal staff is starting in the next couple of weeks.  There were cuts to the number

     of weeks the seasonal staff works, but not the number of seasonal staff.  Some erosion

     to be addressed on the truck trail.  There is a Dead Swamp meeting with SCA on 4/9. 

     Ed will show them the work sites for the SCA crew this spring.  Family Friendly trail

     info was sent to Bruce.  Ed to get it from him.  Signage issues were discussed and Ed

     said there are signs in the works.  Beaver Trail has areas that are washed out.  Ed and

     Eino discussed safety issues, and Ed will pull the markers so people won’t try the trail.

18. Other business – Jayne will be acting President for the Annual Meeting.

19. Next meeting – Thursday, May 6, 2010, 7:00 pm – who will chair? Duane?  Jayne?
